The Balcones Park neighborhood of Austin is located in West Central Austin between Lake Austin and MoPac Expressway, near Mount Bonnell; about 6 miles and a 15-20 minute drive from Downtown Austin. Balcones Park is situated on a hilltop near Mount Bonnell, alongside scenic Lake Austin, and many of the homes have views of the downtown skyline. The neighborhood’s estate-sized lots and abundance of elegant, mature trees shading the roads and the houses, help create an established, historic feel.
The Balcones Park neighborhood is located just west of Camp Mabry, one of Texas’ oldest active military installments. One of the Camp’s most popular attractions is its re-enactments of Texas’ military history. Mabry is also home to a museum, as well as a mile long track where both soldiers and civilians can enjoy a walk or run. Balcones Park schools are a part of the Austin Independent School District.
Students in the neighborhood to the north of Mt. Bonnell Drive attend Highland Park Elementary, Lamar Middle School, and McCallum High School. Students to the south of Mt. Bonnell Drive attend Casis Elementary, O. Henry Middle School, and Stephen F. Austin High School.
Perry Park is located behind Highland Park Elementary and is frequently used by children in the area, but it is also enjoyed by parents, adults and their pets. The park is used by the PTA for many of its events, and the neighborhood association also puts the park to good use! The park contains two large playground areas, soccer and baseball fields, a running track, a large natural wooded area with trails, tennis courts with lights, picnic tables and drinking fountains, and a pavilion for family or organization gatherings.
Just a short drive from the neighborhood, Balcones Park residents can hike up the Mt. Bonnell overlook, which sits atop a cliff where both the stunning homes and breathtaking views of Lake Austin can be observed. On the west side of the community lies one of Austin’s best-kept secrets, the pristine Bright Leaf Preserve. For those who want to enjoy the dazzling nature at Bright Leaf Preserve, Friends of Bright Leaf conduct monthly guided hikes on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month. The hike starts from the parking lot off 2222 and Creek Mountain Road, is approximately 4 miles long and lasts about 2 to 2-1/2 hours.
