Zilker is a neighborhood in south central Austin, Texas. The neighborhood runs south of Lady Bird Lake, generally bordered by the Union Pacific Railway to the southeast/south (Lamar Blvd south of Oltorf), Barton Skyway to the south, Rabb Road and Robert E Lee Road to the west and Lady Bird Lake to the north. Zilker is considered one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Austin due to its location and exceptionally picturesque setting, with rolling hills and mature tree-lined streets. Zilker area homes include everything from smaller homes to large estates, and the neighborhood is comprised of new houses as well as original historic homes, constructed in the late 1920s. It is a community of relaxed, easygoing lifestyles where the residents often gather for coffee, local music, or drinks. Residents also spend hours in nearby Zilker Park and Barton Springs. Served by the Austin Independent School District, students in the neighborhood attend Zilker Elementary School, O. Henry Middle School, or Stephen F. Austin High School. The Zilker neighborhood is part of many popular areas and attractions in Austin. Zilker Park is home to Zilker Botanical Gardens, which includes the Taniguchi Oriental Garden and the Austin Area Garden Center, a non-profit organization created to support Zilker Botanical Garden's mission to promote the education and love of gardening among people of all ages. Also within the park, the Austin Nature and Science Center offers a wide variety of programs for children and adults, as well as the opportunity to explore the surroundings with hands-on exhibits, interactive nature and science trails, and Texas wildlife. In addition, the Center has the Splash Environmental Exhibit which is an educational exhibit recounting the history and details of the Edwards Aquafier. Zilker Park is also home toBarton Springs Pool, the Trail of Lights, and famous music festivals such as Austin City Limits and South by Southwest. One of the most desirable neighborhoods in Austin, with its picturesque location; nearby fauna, flowers and science; eclectic art and Austin style music; and the mixture of historic bungalows and new homes; Zilker surely offers something for everyone.
